What is Enso?

The Enso, or Zen circle, is a common theme in Zen art. As a method of realization, it was traditionally drawn during meditation practice at Zen monasteries by monks and nuns. It is known that when a person can draw the perfect Enso, he/she has attained an enlightened mind.

The Enso itself is a universal symbol of wholeness, and represents the cyclic nature of existence. It is a visual manifestation of the Heart Sutra, “Form is emptiness, and emptiness is form.” It is clear from observing the Enso that form and void are interdependent and define each other, as one cannot exist without the other.

The Enso also reminds us that Life is in constant motion, changing incessantly from moment to moment. This natural law of impermanence serves as a constant reminder to live in the present moment, for it truly is all that we have.
